OXIDATIVE STRESS
OXIDATIVE STRESS describes the state of the body in which the production of reactive
oxygen species(ROS,free radicals) overwhelms the body's antioxidant defences. Our body tries
to maintain balance between free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals that arise from
metabolism , disease, exercise and environmental factors like smoking , pollution or UV rays
are being neutralized by the antioxidants(mainly glutathion) in our cells.
In chemical terms, oxidative stress is a large rise (becoming less negative) in the cellular
reduction potential, or a large decrease in the reducing capacity of the cellular redox couples,
such as glutathion.
OXIDATIVE STRESS is involved in the development and progression of numerous diseases. It
affect most vital organs of our body including Hear. Skin Eyes, Kidney Joints, Brain, Lungs,
Immune System, Blood Vessels. The presence of too many ROS/free radicals leads to oxidative
damage to the molecules in our cells like lipids. proteins and DNA and this in turn can destroy cell
function . In this situation our body suffers, what is called OXIDATIVE STRESS leading to loss in
cell function and to cell death, contributing to loss in organ function . This process leads to the
development of chronic diseases and exacerbates existing conditions.In humans, oxidative stress
is involved in many diseases, such as atherosclerosis, Parkinson's disease, heart failure, myocardial
infarction, Alzheimer's disease, fragile X syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome
Destructive aspect of oxidative stress is the production of reactive oxygen species, which include
free radicals and peroxides However, reactive oxygen species can be beneficial, as they are used
by the immune system as a way to attack and kill pathogens.
